Treasure of a book offered as heirloom
The creators of an opulent Passover bookcalled a Haggadahpresented their masterpiece at the Jewish Center of the Hamptons in East Hampton last weekend. At Passover, Jews traditionally read the story of their peopleÕs exodus out of Egypt, and the Haggadah can be very simple, quite magnificent or any of 5,000 variations in between, according to Irvin Ungar, a former rabbi, the founder of antiquarian bookseller Historicana, and the man behind the Haggadah presented last weekend in East Hampton. Hand bound by East Hampton book binder Paul Vogel, it features 48 reproductions from a 1940 illuminated manuscript by famous artist and Jewish activist Arthur Szyk: hence its name, the Szyk Haggadah.

The Szyk Haggadah, Revived and Illuminated
At the ritual Passover meal, or Seder, many Jewish families will be reading an abbreviated story of the Jews' exodus from Egypt from wine-stained, center-stapled Haggadahs. A more select group will be reading the same slavery-to-freedom story from a leather-bound volume that features 48 brilliant-hued reproductions from an illuminated manuscript by Arthur Szykthe Lodz-born art ist who became one of America's most influential political cartoonists during World War II.

The classic Szyk Haggadah becomes a model masterpiece of the Digital Age
There's a 1,000-year-old haggadah, there's an Internet haggadah, and now there is a new $15,000 Arthur Szyk Haggadah. Szyk (pronounced Shick) was a Jew, a Pole, an American, and always an artist, whose brilliant paintings and cartoons could give new life to ancient traditions or eviscerate a Hitler and Mussolini.

'Szyk Haggadah Goes High-Tech
New volume has first access to original art since 1940.
When Arthur Szyk's Haggadah was first published in London in 1940, the full-color illustrated volume was not only the most expensive Haggadah ever printed, it was one of the most expensive books in the world, selling for $500. Since then, many editions were reprinted in Israel, for popular use, at moderate prices.
Now, Historicana is publishing a new limited edition, "The Szyk Haggadah," the first to be printed in the United States, and the first digitally produced volume, with colors as vibrant as the original edition. In addition, the new volume is the first to have access to the original art, since the 1940 edition.
As publisher Irvin Ungar explains, "Our edition takes advantage of every recent advance in photography, color reproduction, and papermaking technology."

"Drawing on Experience."
"Szyk (pronounced Shick) was a Jew, a Pole, an American, and always an artist, whose brilliant paintings and cartoons could give new life to ancient traditions or eviscerate a Hitler or Mussolini. Now, almost 57 years after Szyk's death, antiquarian bookseller Irvin Ungar has come up with a new edition of the artist's 1940 Haggadah, which, Ungar believes, gives new meaning to the term state-of-the-art, particularly in digital technology."
